Let us first, briefly understand what a compressor is. This gives us a good starting point to view the topic of a digital inverter. 
A compressor is responsible for regulating the refrigerant flow and temperature. It operates at a fixed speed in traditional appliances. It either turns on or off to maintain the desired temperature. However, digital inverter technology has made it possible to use an adjustable speed compressor motor. This can operate at variable speeds depending on the cooling or heating requirements.
